While many of the training sessions in the manual were developed within the context of participatory or collaborative forest management, it is recognized that there is increasing interest within many countries for capacity building in participatory PA management as well. Since many of the processes and tools for both situations are similar, the training sessions in this manual, with some adaptation, can apply to both forest PAs and forest areas that are not PAs. Mainly intended for managers in Africa and Asia.  

This Guide is written for the non-human rights expert and was published in April 2008. It provides an overview on how to strengthen engagement with the international human rights machinery, specifically with UN Treaty Bodies and UN Special Procedures. The guide was developed in response to calls from development practitioners for practical guidance in this area, following an online e-discussion on held on the UN Human Rights Policy Network- HuriTalk - in 2007. The information provided in the Guide is based upon the views and experiences that UN practitioners shared in the course of the e-discussion.

This 94-page toolkit was published in 2006 by the UNDP Civil Society Organizations Division in the Bureau for Resources and Strategic Partnerships.  It is aimed at providing colleagues with practical guidance and essential information in forging partnerships with CSOs. It includes examples of innovative country-level mechanisms to build and strengthen collaboration with CSOs.

The document examines the premise that the informed consent of a community affected by development projects, either public or private, makes good business sense. It argues that the risks created by not obtaining community consent are significant and quantifiable, as are the benefits obtained with meaningful consultation. It examines 4 case studies from around the world (Philippines, Argentina, Thailand and Peru). The report also makes recommendations for stakeholders to engage thoroughly in FPIC.

A 55-page report on applying FPIC in Viet Nam, publshed in August 2010 by UN-REDD. Explains FPIC, how it is applied in Viet Nam in an 8-step process. The report goes into detail for each of the following eight steps: (1) District, Commune and Village Level Awareness Raising,(2) Recruitment of Iterlocutors, (3) Interlocutor Training, (4) Village Meeting Preparation, (5) Conducting village meetings, (6) Recording of decision, (7) Documentation and Reporting, and (8) Verification and Evaluation.  The end of the report discloses the complete resuls for the pilot FPIC exercise in Lam Ha and Di Linh districts.  

A 49-page report published by RECOFTC in November 2010.  The organization was selected to lead the evaluation and verification (E and V) of the FPIC process. At the international level, RECOFTC was contracted to develop a toolkit in this context. E and V of the FPIC process under the UN-REDD Viet Nam Programme is a first test of the draft toolkit based on experiences in various countries in the region. E&V took place in June 2010, with contributions from experts from RECOFTC and three other organizations in Vietnam. Follow-up recommendations are discussed in the report.
