This National REDD+ Strategy demonstrates Kenya’s preparatory process towards REDD+ implementation.  This strategy completes REDD+ readiness elements indicated in Decision 1 of COP 16 Para 71 of the Cancun agreements, namely, the National Forest Monitoring System, a Forest Reference Level and Safeguard Information System.

This policy brief provides an overview of the potential for scaling up community participation in forest management in Zambia as part of the country's REDD+ investment strategy. The report gives some insight on the legal and policy context for community forest management, joint forest management, and private forest management. It also describes the land tenure context, gives examples of good practice in Zambia, and presents a series of investment options.

This assessment report provides a comprehensive review of Malawi's tenure regime in the context of developing the country's national REDD+ program.  The document includes information on the historical context, legal and policy framework, sources of land tenure insecurity, gender issues, and other cross-cutting governance challenges.  A set of recommendations for next steps is included in the conclusion. 

This technical paper emphasizes the opportunity that REDD+ and the global climate agenda represents for countries to engage more actively in securing land and resource rights for indigenous peoples and local communities. At the same time, it stresses how collective tenure rights represent a key element to achieve long-lasting and successful results for REDD+, contributing to addressing global climate change.

Secure tenure rights can make a substantial contribution to reducing deforestation and forest degradation and to enhancing sustainable development. This Information brief1 focuses on the key contribution of collective tenure rights towards mitigating climate change, paying particular attention to the links with national strategies to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD+) and nationally determined contributions (NDCs). Over 2.5 billion rural people rely on this age-old form of property rights for their livelihoods. Furthermore, the customary claims of indigenous peoples and local communities cover more than half of the global land mass (RRI, 2018) – including some of the most important and biodiverse forest areas in the developing world. Recognition of these rights could facilitate scaled-up approaches to bring about needed transformational changes in the landscape.

KEY MESSAGES • Forests are a crucial part of the climate solution if sustainably managed, and sustainable management requires up-to-date, unbiased, accurate and transparent information. • National forest monitoring systems (NFMS) are a foundation for national decision-making, monitoring the implementation and effects of forest policy actions, sustainable forest management, REDD+ and the enhanced transparency framework for action and support of the Paris Agreement under UNFCCC, through the provision of transparent, reliable, relevant, accessible and sustainable forest data. • Since its inception, the UN-REDD Programme has supported over 50 countries in the development of multipurpose national forest monitoring systems. • The Programme has helped 30 countries to meet their international reporting requirements under UNFCCC and continues to support the strengthening of national forest monitoring systems to generate data to improve the quality of reporting and enhance transparency. • To help practitioners to put forest monitoring systems in place, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has developed a range of supporting materials, including the Voluntary Guidelines for National Forest Monitoring and various free, open-source software tools and platforms, such as Open Foris and SEPAL. Those resources have provided a foundation for UN-REDD capacity development over the past 10 years.
