REDD+ is a nature-based solution for climate change mitigation. It offers developing countries incentives for conserving their forests and for taking action to reduce or remove carbon emissions from forests.
REDD+ actions can also help secure many other benefits for both the environment and people - controlling soil erosion, conserving biodiversity, providing food, fuel, and fiber and contributing to local livelihoods, for example. These benefits can also help countries to meet some of the Sustainable Development Goals, from climate change to food security.
When countries plan for REDD+, it’s important that they consider these potential social and environmental benefits and risks – an approach in line with REDD+ safeguards - and how these might vary across the landscape.
