United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)

Definition

An international agreement that was established in 1992 at the Rio Earth Summit. It is the overall framework guiding the international climate negotiations. Its main objective is "stabilization of greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that would prevent dangerous anthropogenic (man-made) interference with the climate system". The Kyoto Protocol is a Protocol to the UNFCCC.
