Securing land tenure for women, either through joint titling or sole proprietorship, can have a catalytic impact on combating climate change, protecting forests and improving the livelihoods of rural families. When women own land, they have more access to credit to invest in small business initiatives such as forest-based enterprises. Secure tenure rights empower women entrepreneurs to manage forests sustainably and to generate income for their families, with benefits for the health and education of their children.

Due to the political, socio-economic and cultural barriers they face in the forestry sector and the roles they have, both inside and out the home, women often lack access to sources of information (e.g. community meetings, pamphlets, cell phones, radios, etc.). As a consequence, they are commonly excluded from opportunities to participate in forest governance and decision-making and training and to secure financing to sustainably manage forests.
